How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

Woman using clear alignerInvisalign is a treatment for crooked teeth that provides you with an incredible alternative to traditional metal braces. This treatment uses clear plastic aligners, instead of metal brackets and wires, to correct the alignment of your teeth, improving the quality of your smile and your oral health. At Shenandoah Family Dentistry, we can help to determine if Invisalign is right for you, and also determine how long your Invisalign treatment will take.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign provides many significant benefits over treatment with traditional metal braces.
•  The clear plastic aligners are much more discreet. There are no shiny metal brackets or wires affixed to your teeth. Instead, the aligners practically disappear from view when you smile, making it impossible for others to see that you are wearing them.
•  Your aligners are removable. You can take your aligners out to eat, which enables you to enjoy all of your favorite foods throughout the course of your treatment. They can also be taken out to brush and floss your teeth, making oral care much easier.
•  The aligners are much more comfortable. Where brackets and wires from traditional braces can rub your intraoral tissues causing sores, Invisalign aligners are smooth.
•  You require fewer office visits overall. You are provided with several sets of aligners at once. Fewer office visits mean fewer disruptions in your schedule.

How Invisalign Works

Your Invisalign aligners are created from digital impressions of your mouth. This allows us to custom create aligners that will be able to gradually shift your teeth into their optimal alignment. Specialized software allows us to see every step of your treatment. You can even see your new smile before treatment begins!

With Invisalign, you go through several sets of aligners. Each set is designed to be worn for two weeks at a time. Depending upon the exact length of your treatment you will go through 18 to 30 sets. The rigid plastic of the aligners works to put gentle pressure on your teeth. This widens the periodontal ligaments, loosening your teeth. The aligners are then able to guide your teeth to where they need to go and stabilize them in place. Once your treatment is complete, you are provided with a retainer to help maintain your new smile.

Factors that Affect the Length of Your Invisalign Treatment

Treatment with Invisalign is generally shorter than treatment with traditional braces. On average, treatment takes anywhere from 9 to 15 months to complete. However, there are several factors that can impact the exact length of your treatment.
•  Your age. Younger patients typically see results sooner. This is because the jawbone is still developing, meaning the teeth are easier to shift. Older teens and adults may require longer.
•  The severity of your alignment issues. The more significant your alignment issues, the longer the treatment will take.
•  Your commitment to your treatment. While Invisalign aligners are removable, they still need to be worn for a good portion of the day. They should only be taken out to eat and to brush your teeth. It is recommended they be worn 20 to 22 hours every day to achieve optimal results. Leaving them out for too long will lengthen your treatment. At the same time, not changing your aligners as directed can lead to longer treatment time.
•  Oral hygiene. It is essential that you brush and floss your teeth every day, and maintain regular dental cleanings and exams throughout the duration of your treatment. If you develop issues like cavities or gum disease, these issues can disrupt treatment and lengthen it.
•  Retainer use. After treatment, you will be provided with a retainer to help maintain your new smile. This retainer should be worn as directed. Neglecting your retainer can lead to your teeth shifting back out of alignment again, undoing the results of your treatment.
