Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

This treatment provides an incredible alternative to traditional dentures and bridges. Rather than resting on top of your gum tissue, implants involve the surgical placement of small titanium posts into your jawbone. These posts are what provide support for your replacement teeth. Before you can receive dental implants, a consultation is necessary to determine if it is the right solution for you. Shenandoah Family Dentistry can help.

Are You Missing Teeth?

There are many different causes of tooth loss. Some of the most common include gum disease and facial trauma. After tooth loss, it is essential that you replace your missing teeth right away. Dental implants are made to replace missing teeth. This treatment is incredibly versatile and can replace an individual tooth, a section of missing teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth.

Are You in Good Health?

Because implants require a surgical procedure, it is essential that you are in good health. During your consultation, we go over your medical history. If you have any health conditions, such as diabetes, they will need to be well-managed before you can receive surgery. If your medical conditions are uncontrolled, this can lead to complications, both during surgery and during your recovery.

Also, during your consultation, we examine your mouth. Part of what we are looking for is oral health issues like gum disease and cavities in your remaining teeth. These conditions, if not treated, can lead to infections and implant failure.

Do You Drink or Smoke?

Before you undergo surgery, you will be recommended to quit habits like drinking alcohol and smoking. If you cannot quit these habits for good, it is important that you abstain at least until your treatment and healing are complete. Alcohol consumption can cause complications with blood clotting, which can lead to bleeding issues during surgery. Smoking slows your recovery and interferes with your immune system. Slower blood flow slows the delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients to your gums and your jawbone. With your immune system compromised, your body has a more difficult time effectively fighting off infections.

How Much Bone Mass Have You Lost in Your Jaw?

The success of your dental implants relies heavily on the condition of your jawbone. This is because your bone fuses to the posts as you heal. This process, called osseointegration, stabilizes the posts within your jaw so that they can provide secure support for your new teeth. The posts are strong and sturdy. If you do not have enough bone mass, however, your jawbone will not be able to fuse properly. This can lead to loose posts, unstable teeth, and implant failure.

How Important is Age?

You can be too young for dental implants. The jaw continues to grow and develop until you are in your late teens to early 20s. Placing implants in a still-developing bone can cause issues. However, once your jawbone has finished developing, you are never too old. As long as your jawbone is in good condition and you are healthy, you can receive implants. They provide the same benefits no matter if you are in your 30s or your 70s.

Dental implants provide numerous benefits over traditional treatments for tooth loss. If you have suffered tooth loss, contact Shenandoah Family Dentistry today at (540) 667-8731 to schedule your consultation and find out if dental implants are right for you.
